I was taught piano by Richard for over a decade. He kept me interested, was an excellent teacher and provided me with a skill which will last forever. Could not recommend his piano lessons more. In addition to being a great teacher, in all my life I have never seen a better pianist in person.

I’ve been playing piano for number of years, and before having Richard as my piano teacher I was finding piano a little boring as I was reading music from music books that was basically nursery rhymes. I know that’s how you learn to read music, but after a time that becomes a little boring. When I Met Richard for the first he taught me to learn my favourite song which was Shape of you by Ed Sheeran, and within a matter of weeks I could play the whole song. Richards methods of teaching, have taught me to memorise piano pieces and play by ear, to the point that I can now play Clair De Lune by Debussy off by heart without any music in front of me, I’m not joking. If your wanting to learn piano I highly recommend the Brighton Piano Teacher, Richard James.

Richard has been my music teacher my whole life. I started when I was just 3 years old. I am now on ABRSM grade 8. I've used my pieces in my performance exam in GCSE music. Richard taught me and two of my friends Music GCSE as well. I learnt composition, listening papers, history of music and advanced piano performance. I took up the piano when I retired. Richard had been my teacher for most of the time since then. He was great at leading me through the basics when I started to the more advanced repertoire I am working through now. He is patient with my mistakes, encouraging and is extremely good at helping with the musicality and interpretation of the music. I like the fact that he is flexible with the repertoire and prepared to work with me on pieces I choose.

Richard is an enthusiastic and passionate pianist and teacher, who has helped my daughter learn and progress at a fantastic rate. My daughter has been having lessons with Richard for a couple of years now and still enjoys his lessons as much if not more than she did at the beginning. Great guy, great piano teacher! His lessons have got to be one of the best parts of my week. Incredibly good at teaching and got me out of my shell through our lessons over time. Before, I was aimlessly practicing the same few songs over and over because I struggled with reading sheet music, but now we play duets and I am able to almost flawlessly read from a score. I have known Richard for over 15 years, he is the best teacher I have ever come across. He is incredibly patient, has a good sense of humour and lessons are fun - which is important. His research and knowledge of techniques for efficient learning are great. He taught me as an adult to reach Grade 6 piano and Grade 5 theory, and now my daughter has lessons with him and in a few years has reached Grade 8 and more importantly she has a love of music and wants to play the piano for enjoyment.
